Butterfly scales

Probably most people are aware that the colour and pattern on the wings of a butterfly or moth are due to a mass of minute scales which when rubbed off onto the fingers is nothing more than a fine dust.

When examined more closely the scales form an organised layer, overlapping as tiles on a roof.

Upon still closer examination each scale itself is seen to exhibit unbelievably fine structure. From a basal membrane arise vertical bearers upon which parallel interlaced ridges are supported. In species where metallic colours are produced these ridges are exaggerated and bear fine striae that give rise to interference colours.
